Vlisco Dialogues: Colour as Conversation
Some prints are simply seen. Others carry memory, move through generations and invite a response.
Vlisco Dialogues lives in that second space: a world shaped by colour, craft and a remarkable archive of designs that have taken on meaning through the women and communities who have worn them over time. Each print holds its own emotional charge, cultural resonance and visual language — familiar to some, entirely new to others, yet always ready to start a conversation.
As Vlisco Dialogues arrives at Chapters Forte dei Marmi, we spoke with the brand about the stories held in its archive, the freedom of dressing with colour and the power of creativity to bring different perspectives together.
The Archive as a Starting Point
For Vlisco Dialogues, the archive is never only a source of visual inspiration. It is a collection of memories, identities, ambitions and stories still in motion.
Q: When you enter the archive, what are you looking for first: colour, symbolism, emotion, or a story waiting to be retold?
A: What always strikes us first is emotion. Before we understand the symbolism or the history, we feel something.
The archive is a collection of human stories, memories, ambitions and identities. Some prints feel joyful, others powerful, mysterious or playful. That emotional connection is often the starting point. Then comes the curiosity: the story behind a print, the ways people have interpreted it over time and how that dialogue can continue today.
Q: Many Vlisco designs have been named, worn and given meaning by women across West and Central Africa. How do you approach this living cultural legacy with the care and respect it requires, while bringing it into a contemporary context?
A: The most important thing is understanding that these meanings do not belong to us alone. They have been shaped over generations by women who adopted these prints into their own lives and cultures. Our role is to listen to those stories and learn from them.
At Vlisco Dialogues, we see heritage as something living rather than fixed. We work closely with artists, designers, makers and cultural voices who bring their own perspectives. We honour the history of a print while creating room for new interpretations. That balance between respect and reinvention is where the most exciting work happens.
Q: The word “Dialogues” suggests exchange rather than a one-way point of view. Who are the voices, communities and creative perspectives that actively shape the brand today?
A: The brand is shaped by many voices. It begins with the women who have worn Vlisco for generations and continue to inspire us today. It also includes contemporary creatives across fashion, art, photography and cultural thinking.
What excites us most is the exchange between different perspectives. Vlisco was born through cultural exchange and has always existed at the intersection of different worlds. We believe creativity grows through dialogue. Vlisco Dialogues is a platform where these worlds can meet, inspire one another and create something new together.
Print as Personal Expression
A Vlisco print does not sit in the background. It carries energy, intention and a point of view.
Q: Print can be immediate, emotional and deeply personal. What do you think a Vlisco print can say about the person wearing it before they say anything themselves?
A: A print can communicate confidence, individuality and a sense of self-expression. It can reveal a mood, a memory, a cultural connection or simply a willingness to be seen.
What we love about Vlisco is that the prints invite conversation. This is one of the reasons why we pair our garments with proverbs inspired by African wisdom and optimism. A Vlisco print tells people that the wearer has made an intentional choice. In a world that often encourages sameness, it becomes a celebration of individuality.
Q: How do you translate the richness of these textiles into ready-to-wear pieces that still feel modern, spontaneous and relevant to everyday life?
A: It begins with understanding how people live today. The goal is not to make the print follow fashion trends, but to let it feel natural within the lifestyle of our community.
We focus on silhouette, proportion, quality and styling. Sometimes the most modern gesture is restraint, allowing a beautiful print to speak through a simple, elegant shape. We see our garments as a canvas for our prints. We want people to wear Vlisco with the same ease as a favourite white shirt or denim jacket.
That tension between bold expression and wearability is what makes it so interesting.
Colour, Optimism and Possibility
In the Vlisco world, colour is never decorative. It is a language rooted in emotion, energy and a fearless instinct for unexpected combinations.
Q: There is a strong sense of joy in the brand, but never in a simplistic way. What does optimism mean to you as a creative direction today?
A: For us, optimism begins with imagination. It is the ability to look beyond what exists today and envision new possibilities. In many ways, that is something Vlisco has always done.
The world is increasingly complex and divided, yet creativity has the power to connect people across cultures and experiences. Reality has its limits, while imagination is endless. At Vlisco Dialogues, optimism is about celebrating creativity, beauty and human connection as forces that can move us forward.
That is also why we introduced our first High Summer collection, Eternal Sun: a celebration of joie de vivre and positive energy at a moment when the world needs it most.
Q: Colour is central to the Vlisco world. Is there a particular colour combination, print or visual code from the archive that feels especially meaningful to you at this moment?
A: For generations, Vlisco has developed colour palettes that are unmistakably its own. The combinations created through these colour cards are unique, instantly recognisable and full of emotion. They spark joy and optimism, which feels particularly relevant today.
Their brightness is deeply rooted in the brand’s dialogue with West and Central Africa. These colours were developed to remain vivid under the intensity of the sun, allowing their brilliance and depth to endure over time. This has become an essential part of Vlisco’s visual language.
We always begin with the sun, our brand mark. As a result, Vlisco yellow appears throughout our world and has become a symbol within Vlisco Dialogues. For us, it represents energy, warmth, creativity and possibility.
What inspires us most, however, are the unexpected combinations found in the archive. Colours that, on paper, should not work together somehow create something incredibly harmonious and alive. That spirit of experimentation feels very relevant today.
Q: In a fashion landscape often drawn to restraint and neutrality, Vlisco Dialogues embraces abundance. What does dressing boldly mean today?
A: Dressing boldly is not about being loud. It is about being authentic.
In a world where so much can feel standardised, boldness is the confidence to express who you are. Sometimes that expression comes through colour, sometimes through silhouette, sometimes through a single detail. What matters is that it feels personal.
We believe people are increasingly searching for individuality and emotional connection. Dressing boldly is simply giving yourself permission to embrace both.
A World to Live With
Vlisco Dialogues extends beyond the wardrobe, entering the spaces, rituals and objects that shape everyday life.
Q: The brand is expanding beyond clothing into accessories and interiors. How do you imagine the Vlisco world living inside someone’s home, rituals and everyday spaces?
A: We increasingly think about the World of Vlisco rather than only a fashion brand. The values that make our textiles meaningful — craftsmanship, storytelling, colour and self-expression — can naturally extend into many aspects of daily life.
We love the idea of Vlisco being present in small rituals: a scarf worn every day, curling up under a favourite Vlisco blanket or a beautifully crafted object that brings joy each time you encounter it. We see these pieces as timeless souvenirs of life, objects that accompany moments, memories and personal stories.
The ambition is to create moments of inspiration, creativity and self-expression. To build a world that people can truly live with and make their own.
Q: Looking ahead, what would you like people to feel when they encounter Vlisco Dialogues for the first time?
A: Joy. Curiosity. Optimism.
We hope people feel they are entering a world rich with stories, creativity and possibility. A world that feels familiar yet unexpected. A world that celebrates individuality while reminding us of what connects us.
Most of all, we hope they feel inspired: inspired to express themselves, to embrace colour, to see beauty in different perspectives and to become part of the conversation.
We believe the most beautiful things happen in dialogue, when unexpected worlds meet and something new can emerge. In a time when the world can feel increasingly divided, we believe creativity has the power to bring people together.
Because ultimately, we all share the same sun.
